Petty Officer First Class Maxwell recently returned from Afghanistan, his third tour overseas. While he was there in 2014, he flew a flag over the base in honor of Barberton Elementary East. A ceremony was held at the school for the 3rd and 4th graders, where his wife, Mrs. Maxwell, a second grade teacher at Barberton Elementary East, explained the sacrifice someone in the military, as well as their family, must endure. The students were also encouraged to thank any military members they see or encounter on a daily basis. The flag was raised by Mr. Maxwell and his son, Preston, a fourth grader at Barberton Elementary East, followed by everyone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The flag was then lowered and folded properly in the triangular fold. The flag itself will be displayed in the school’s front lobby case, along with the certificates of authenticity for being flown overseas under the US Navy.
