Mission Statement
The Barberton City Schools Food Service Department believes:
· A well-nourished child is better prepared to learn
· Learning healthy eating habits at an early age is essential to developing life-long healthy and productive lifestyles.
· The school breakfast and lunch should be the most affordable source of nutrition available for all children.
· A healthy diet can be achieved by selecting a wide variety of foods using the Food Pyramid as a guide for daily food choices.
· The school’s food service staff is an integral partner in the education of the child.
Free & Reduced Priced Lunch
The Barberton Schools participates in the National School Breakfast and Lunch program. Students from households at or below the published income level may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals. To apply for this benefit, please obtain an application from your building secretary. A new Free & Reduced Lunch application must be completed each new school year, failure to do so will result in a termination of lunch benefits. Applications are accepted anytime during the school year.
Computerized Point of Sale
All schools in our district have a computerized Point of Sale which allow parents to deposit money into their student’s account. All of our students have been assigned an ID number, which they have memorized. They will keep the same ID number from kindergarten all the way through the twelfth grade. When the student goes through the lunch line, they will punch their student ID number into the pin pad. The system contains a student database, which will include a picture of the student along with the student’s information including their account balance.
Some additional points to remember are listed below:
· Pre-payment for meals and milk by the week, month or year will be accepted any time.
· Pre-payment on account is encouraged but not mandated. Students still have the option of purchasing their lunch on a daily basis with cash.
· Please send check, cash or money order for pre-payment in the sealed “Magic Meal Envelopes” which are available at your child’s elementary school. Information on lunch envelopes must include your child’s name, grade, teacher and Student ID number.
· Please do not combine lunch money with other school fees on the same check or money order.
About Our Breakfast Program
The Ohio Department of Education’s office of Child Nutrition Services (CNS) in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) administrates the Ohio School Breakfast Program. Nationally several million children start their day with a nutritionally balanced school breakfast.
Children who eat breakfast:
· Perform better in the classroom
· Are less irritable in the morning
· Improve in test scores
· Increase learning readiness
· Are more attentive in school
Time and again, statistics have proven that breakfast is the building block for the day. However, sometimes it’s the most easily forgotten due to parents and children rushing to get to work and school.
Barberton City School District offers breakfast in every school. Contact your child’s school for breakfast service times. If your child has a free or reduced lunch application on file, he or she is also eligible for a free or reduced priced breakfast. Breakfast prices are as follows:
BHS Breakfast - $1.65
BMS Breakfast - $1.45
Elementary Breakfast - $1.45
Reduced Breakfast (All Grades) - $0.30
About our Lunch Program
The United States Department of Agriculture’s 1993 School Nutrition Dietary Assessment studies show that the eating patterns of children and youth parallel the eating patterns of the nation. Generally, children are consuming too much fat, saturated fat, sodium and too few complex carbohydrates.
Since school meals provide a significant contribution to a child’s diet, our School Food Service Department has planned menus which includes low fat foods, additional servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grain products. Our goal is to menu and serve school lunches that contributes no more than 30% of calories from fat and 10% or less calories from saturated fat. In addition our planned menus provide the nutrient standards for calories, protein, calcium, iron and vitamins A & C, for your child’s specific age group. Lunch Prices are as follows:
BHS & BMS Lunch - $2.65
Elementary Lunch - $2.40
Reduced Lunch (All Grades) - $0.40
BHS & BMS Pizza Lunch - $2.90
Milk - $0.45
PayForIt – Online School Lunch Payment
The Barberton City Schools are pleased to offer parents the ability to manage their child’s meal account over the Internet by using PayForIt.net, an online school management tool. You can create and access your account by going straight to www.PayForIt.net or by accessing it from barbertonschools.org. Cash and checks will still be accepted, this is just another option.
With PayForIt.net, parents can log in at any time to make a deposit to their child’s account, view their child’s account balance, set up recurring deposits to their child’s account, set up e-mail notifications when their child’s account falls below a certain dollar amount or see what the child purchased on their account for up to the last 30 days. PayForIt.net integrates seamlessly with the district software so when money is deposited it should be available for kids within two hours in most cases.
PayForIt.net allows you to view your child’s account balance and see what they have purchased. If you have multiple children enrolled in the Barberton City Schools you can add money to each child’s account during the same transaction.
Transactions processed by PayForIt.net are safe and secure using Secure Socket Link, SSL, technology with Digicert. With this technology, schools can be assured that all student information, credit card information and all other student data will be highly encrypted and secure.
If you wish to use a Mac computer to process a transaction, you must use Firefox internet browser; PayForIt.net is not currently compatible with Safari. You may download Firefox for free by visiting www.mozilla.com.
If you choose not to use PayForIt.net for credit card transactions or ACH Electronic Check, Barberton City Schools continues to accept cash and checks at each school cafeteria.
